Vitiligo/Hypopigmentation

About Vitiligo

Dr Shreya Vitaliagio Dermatoscopy Dermatology Treatment Northern Sydney Derm.

Vitiligo is a disease that causes areas of skin to lose colour, resulting in spots and patches of lighter skin.

Some people develop just a few spots, whereas others may have more widespread colour loss.

Vitiligo is considered an autoimmune condition where your own body is attacking the pigment cells in your skin.

It can occur in all skin types and at all ages. Whilst vitiligo cannot be cured, treatment may restore skin colour.

Sun protection is extremely important as skin with vitiligo burns easily given there is no pigment to protect your skin from the sun’s rays.

A bad sunburn can also worsen vitiligo (known as koebnerisation).

If you have vitiligo, the sooner you start treatment, the more effective it tends to be.
