What is Acne?

Dr Shreya Andric cne Treatment Dermatology Treatment Northern Sydney Derm.

Acne is a common skin condition affecting the hair follicle and sebaceous gland, in which there is expansion and blockage of the follicle and inflammation. It can affect the face, chest, back, shoulders, and buttocks. Acne affects females and males of all races and ethnicities. It is most common in adolescents and young adults (affecting 85% of 16-18 year olds), but it can occur at any age and it can have a significant impact on self-esteem and quality of life.

Acne varies in severity from mild to severe. Untreated, severe acne can result in scarring, which is significantly more difficult to treat than the acne itself.

Acne can be predominantly comedonal (blackheads/whiteheads), papulopustular (presence of red and pus-filled spots) or nodulocystic, with larger, deeper, painful lesions.
